Lukedraik is a flash user, who has strayed from animation from the past few months and has taken up interactive design. He was born in Switzerland, but now resides in the US. His main medium is flash, however he can also use a variety of other programs as well. He is also prominent with digital artwork, his main style being sub-anime with some knowledge in retro.

[edit] Username

Lukedraik's real name is Nate. In 2003 Nate was in fourth grade, and had a hobby drawing. He decided to create a webcomic featuring characters which he created that year, Luke and Draik. The site was launched in 2004 and the com was released in '05. His username was based off the domain name, which was lukedraik (a combination of Luke and Draik). Lukedraik is spelled lowercased. It is preffered if it is only uppercased at the begining of a sentence.

[edit] 2004

Lukedraik recieved his first copy of flash, Flash MX 2004 Pro, at age 11. At the time he was inspired by Legendary Frog, and attempted to animate in his 'chibi' style. The result product was a minute long animation titled 'Neon's Walk'. It featured a "floater" styled person walking and tripping over a rock. Other projects were started following the site, which was a freewebs domain at the time.

[edit] Starting the Site

The site was basically a text based freewebs site using premade a HTML template. It was going to feature a webcomic featuring the characters 'Luke and Draik', although lukedraik went through some style changes in late '04, although it returned to it's original state before '05.

[edit] 2005

A year later the quality of his animations were improved, and he began using different styles in his works, which were usually short animations. Around this time he had found other flash authors such as The Super Flash Bros, and Vinnie Veritas. Lukedraik also began coding simple items, such as buttons, and other little trinkets. By late '05 he learned more coding, and began making games, such as a pong game with multiple levels and modes.

[edit] Style Tests

Lukedraik discovered different methods of animating, as well as drawing. He began making animations using movie clips, pencil tool, and the paint tool. he became comfortable with the paint brush and line tool, which took longer to create.

[edit] Breaking Away

The site broke away from the premade HTML template and beared the look of the Home Star Runner Website. It featured a simple intro, and the pages were basic graphics with buttons on the left. A character in the center would talk when you moused over the links. In late '05 the site began to evolve into an original style and featured a radio player at the top.

[edit] 2006

Two years later, his animations became smoother, and the site broke away from a Home Star Runner look alike. He also recieved a copy of Studio 8, after fearing the new Flash would be much too different from the older version. Lukedraik had set up accounts on various sites, such as deviantart, newgrounds, and ugoplayer, although he has very little activity on ugo. His works went from planned projects to short clips done in his free time. The site was redone in late '06 to be easy to update, and allowed more coverage of his works, because he felt that one of those short clips would evolve into an animation.

[edit] Going Retro

The site stayed the same until late '06 when it became the first template created by lukedraik. The 'Retro Template' featured his artwork, movies, games, downloads, and news, and was updated frequently due to it's easy to update system. Many users have complained about how complicated it is to find the links, because when you mouse over the letters, the text is reading bottom to top.

[edit] 2007

The begining of '07 did not vary much from later '06. During the summer, he recieved a trial of Flash CS3. During his trial, he began making smoother animations and better special effects. He also began a game project called 'Daisukai', which he is planning on to be an RPG concerning saving an island village and sealing away demons. When the trial expired, Lukedraik decided to head to newgrounds for his first time in almost a year. He became inspired by the many new flash authors and works posted on there. He then began another project called 'Demon Blade' about a boy being possesed by a demon. A trailer was in the works, and was then forgotten when his computer became unstable. After the computer recovered, he began working on a flash for his friend's birthday, which is now known as Emily's Trip.

[edit] Emily's Trip

Emily's Trip is probably lukedraik's best animation, with a runtime of 3:27 (3:59 with credits) and many dynamic camera views, despite being created without a v-cam. It was originally a movie for his friend's birthday, and took 10 days to create. It was rushed to meet the September 15 deadline, which compromised the animation's quality. The movie recieved an 'awesome score' less than an hour after being submitted to newgrounds.

[edit] Animations

The Phone Call - A short animation made by lukedraik and his friend, 1800CCP. It is a slight horror short about the message you recieve when you dial a number that is out of order.

Emily's trip - Formly titled 'Emily Visits Le Locke de Dramonte', this is most likely lukedraik's greatest accomplishment in the flash community. the project took 10 days to complete, and recieved an 'awesome score' on newgrounds less than an hour after being submitted. It features himself and his friend, Emily, who the animation was a present for. Many have noted how Le Locke bears resemblance to 'CCC'.

[edit] Games

Pong Remastered - A basic Pong game with multiple levels of difficulty, two player mode, and classic. It also features a 'Super Mode' for a "crazy" game experience.

[edit] Web Templates

Retro Template - His most complex design, featuring a page loader, built in pages, downloads, news and tabs.

Yarn Template - A Flash Template made for a customer who deals with selling yarn.

Splatter Template - An easy template with everything included, nice and easy to use.

Music Template - A template created for a music studio that gives lessons. It is not linked to on the site because of the email links included in the template.

[edit] Artwork

Retro Background - A retro looking background he used for the retro template.

Unfinished - A work created to show the process of 'bringing characters to life'.

[edit] 2008

Lukedraik has quit working on most animation based projects. Despite this fact, the website has been going through changes and is still not complete. As lukedraik strays from animation, he has been picking up interactive design.

[edit] Go

Sometime in 2007-2008, lukedraik had begun publishing Go problems. The problems come from an ancient Chinese board game, Wei Qi, known as Go in America. He has been publishing one every weekday, and 3 every weekend. The only time he has been off schedule is when he was overwhelmed with work and could not complete any. He has also been working on a compilation of the problems, mainly for newgrounds com, since they do not support short games/animations.

[edit] Narau Kanji!

Another project that lukedraik is working on is an "interactive learning game" called Narau Kanji!. Narau Kanji! is basically a dictionary of Japanese characters that can be used to learn the language. It is still not complete, and lukedraik has set a schedule to upload 7 new characters every Friday.

[edit] Website
