Five-Iron is an animator from a small mountain town in Colorado who started flash animation in 2005. He is a twenty year old college drop out who origianlly intended to earn a Bachelor's of Science degree at Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana. After spending less than a year at this college he decided to become an independent animator instead. His major achievement in the flash community was a short animation entitled "Upstairs". Since then, he's been working on other media formats such as comic books and film.

[edit] Start
Five-Iron grew up in a broken home in the mountains. He spent six years working around the town, from bagging groceries to being a janitor. He didn't have any friends and everyone always picked on him for being wierd in school and at work so he started to better himself through music, literature, and media. It was in 2003 when Five-Iron got his first taste of Flash, noticing the application on the school's computers. He spent hours after school messing around animating with it and soon purchased his own copy.
[edit] 2006
By far Five-Iron's most recognizable work has been"Upstairs". Known for it's ambient track by Kingbastard, it featured a touching story about a faceless character who could escape his world by creating music. Many hailed it as a masterful achievement in the flash community and built a small fan-base for Drew Matson's work. It also won several other film fest awards around America.
[edit] subcategory
The success of "Upstairs" caught the eye of the record company known as Herb Recordings. Impressed with his talents, they signed him on the company as their first official animator. This gave Five-Iron the capabillity to use all of their label's music to promote the musical artist. An official DVD showcasing Five-Irons works with the artist is due to release in the near future.
[edit] 2007
A more subtle year for Five-Iron, releasing only two animations known as "Soldier Side" and"God's Away on Business". By for the shortest of his works, "Soldier Side" was made within three days for a college project. The style featured a more anime style as aposed to his original success into the experimental world. "God's Away on Business" was made for Mindistortion.tv's five year anniversary contest. Although it was a mixed success at Newgrounds.com, it won first place on Mindistortion.net and pulled together a bigger fan base from the site.
[edit] Style
Although he lacks experience and has never taken an art class in his life, he makes up for it by putting a lot of heart into his works. He defines his own style as "Innocence in Carnage" because it always portrays his characters having child like demenors surrounded by either a huge corporate world or destroyed cities. Obviously a reflection upon his own life. Quoting Drew on why he calls his style "Innocent" he remarks, "I just enjoy drawing things from when I was a kid. Dinosaurs, rockets, robots... You've probably noticed some kid toys in my work. They all remind me of a happier time when nothing bothered me about the world. A time when I really felt like I could fly even though the farthest I could reach was not very high".
[edit] Nickname
Drew nicknamed himself "Five-Iron" because he would only listen to the ska band "Five Iron Frenzy". This nicknamed inspired his own personal character that always carries a five iron golf club with him. Before that, he had numerous amounts of nicknames such as Nicatine-Boy due to his smoking habits, Fluffy due to his child like attitude, and NeverHood due his wacky love of Doug Tennapel.
