AS3 stands for Actionscript 3. It is the third revision of the code designed explicitly for use with Adobe Flash, developed by Adobe. It was first available in Flash CS3, which is also backwards compatible with now defunct Macromedia's AS2. Some significant changes include the swapping of ability to embed actionscript in movie clips with instances on the main timeline.
